The NDP Group has released some sales data for May 2019, and overall the picture is not as good as we think. The overall video game market was down 11% compared to the same month last year ($641 million versus $717 million). As a result, equipment was $149 million (-20%), software $262 million (-13%) and accessories $230 million (unchanged). For the year as a whole, video game sales were down 3%.
This is the lowest level of software sales in May since 2013, indicating a lack of attractive software on the market. This is evidenced by the fact that Mortal Kombat 11 once again topped the software list for the month. The day has come for PS4 which also remained at the second place.
As for hardware, we’re in a transitional phase where potential buyers are probably waiting to see what Sony and Microsoft will do. Existing systems have not seen a price drop for a long time, which is not a great incentive for new customers. The one exception is the Switch, which again dominated hardware sales this month. There’s no doubt that the hybrid system is a big hit with vacationers who can take it anywhere in the summer. This year, the Switch leads the pack in terms of unit sales and dollar sales.
